Celebrating Our International Women Leaders
banner

The International Women Leaders (IWL) scholarship program is celebrating a time of accomplishments and new beginnings. Over the course of May, six IWL scholars graduated from their academic programs and embarked on their journeys of leadership and service. Join us in celebrating Becky, Dinah, Dora, Ib, Marina and Tamar by watching this year’s virtual graduation celebration. The program is also excited to announce the newest incoming class of scholars, who will soon begin study at our excellent ELCA colleges and universities, visa process permitting. This promising group of seven students represents global companion churches in Brazil, Malaysia, Namibia, Palestine, Poland and Rwanda. They will join the IWL community as they embark on bachelor’s degrees at Augsburg University, California Lutheran University, Concordia College, Gustavus Adolphus College, Newberry College, St. Olaf College and Wittenberg University. Congratulations to the graduates and the incoming scholars! Casting Call: ELCA Missionaries Serving in Egypt
Mission Personnel Reflection

Watch out Hollywood, there is a star in our midst! Our very own Steven Saari, a long-term missionary serving in Cairo, Egypt, received a call from an Egyptian television casting director looking for an older male to play a British doctor on a Ramadan series evening drama. Not only was he cast, but he got to spend a day filming and standing with two of Egypt’s biggest television stars, Dina El Sherbiny and Sabry Fawwaz. Steve, who had a short speaking role (which you can see in the following clips), said of his experience: “The building used for filming was just like those scenes of Hollywood — rows of boring industrial-style hangers with trailers of clothes and teams of specialty people everywhere. The difference, of course, being the very real backdrop of Egypt: pyramids in the far distance, wild dogs searching the building corners for lunch, men riding donkeys which are pulling hobbit-carts of hay, random cats sleeping anywhere and everywhere, and the classic technicolor food cart of Egyptian breakfast known as "Arabeya Fuul." So the show itself was a time-period piece (1940s) with much drama and mystery — think Christmas Hallmark TV special mixed with that one Clue movie.” Steve got to spend a long day of shooting and learned what it is like to be an actor, as well as have a great experience with other actors helping him with his part! Congratulations to Steve!
