MARCH 2017

What is YAGM
Evan Collins, a Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteer serving in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, was recently asked, “Should we call your YAGM year a year of service?” Though it initially seemed like a simple question to answer, upon further reflection he realized it is difficult to answer with a simple yes or no. Read Evan’s reflections on this question, and learn about the depth and breadth that he understands YAGM to have around the world. | Support Evan's Journey

Strengthening the Church for Mission and Ministry in Costa Rica
The Costa Rican Lutheran Church (Iglesia Luterana Costarricense, ILCO) centers much of its mission on the most vulnerable populations – indigenous people, people living in poverty, immigrants, and people who are ill, among others. The church is quite small, but it’s reach is vast and, located in a region of the world that is dealing with significant migrant challenges due to violence, its call is clear. The ELCA has committed to supporting this church (and the Lutheran Church in Honduras) and helping strengthen these small churches that have such a significant impact. Read more about this project, and consider the ways you and your congregation can support this work.

'Called, gathered and sent'
In the March issue of Living Lutheran, the cover story, "Called, gathered and sent,” shares stories and pictures of ELCA missionaries serving around the world. From Bolivia, to Tanzania, to Australia, to the Holy Land, read more about the ways the ELCA is sending missionaries to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world.

The ELCA celebrates International Women's Day!
March 8 was International Women’s Day and the ELCA took part in celebrating, honoring and remembering all the achievements that women have made throughout the years. In addition to praying, singing and celebrating International Women’s Day in worship services, ELCA members were invited to take part in a million dollar challenge for the International Women Leaders initiative. To learn more about the initiative, watch this short video on why the ELCA has prioritized women’s education for international students from around the world.

Updates from Malaysia
The Rev. Eric and the Rev. Wendolyn Trozzo are serving as missionaries in Malaysia. Read their recent newsletter that shares stories and pictures of the work they are a part of in Sabah, Malaysia. Read about some of the work that a recent graduate from the Sabah Theological Seminary (where the Wendolyns teach) is doing in Sepulut, Sabah. Thanks be to God for the ways in which the gospel is being shared around the world!

Lutheran-Catholic joint observance of 500th anniversary of the Reformation
On March 2, the ELCA Conference of Bishops’ Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Committee and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Committee gathered for a Lutheran-Catholic service in Chicago. This was a historic observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton said, “The Lutheran-Roman Catholic joint prayer service, one of the fruits of 50 years of dialogue between our two churches, was a beautiful celebration of what we hold in common. We could see each other again as brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray that our increasing unity is a witness to our culture."
