Living Lutheran: One of the oldest ELCA churches is located in the U.S. Virgin Islands
“If someone were to ask you to name one of the oldest Lutheran churches in the Western Hemisphere, would you know it is Frederick Lutheran Church on St. Thomas Island? Would you believe them if they told you it is a Black Lutheran church in the New World that was founded less than 150 years after Martin Luther wrote the 95 Theses?” Living Lutheran’s January/February lead feature tells the legacy of seven historic Lutheran churches in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The story of these churches is one of political influence, oppression, liberation, change and growth. NEW: A study curriculum on civic life and faith
The ELCA Task Force on Studies for Civic Life and Faith has released a six-session study about government, democracy and how Christians are called to participate in civic life. Each customizable session comes with a teaching video, prayers, hymn suggestions, Scriptures, group discussion questions, suggested resources and case studies. After each session, participants are asked to give feedback on the content to help the task force write a draft social statement. The study response period is open through Oct. 15. The 40 days of Lent are a season to reflect and remember, to look forward and ahead. These are not easy times for many of us. Yet Lent reminds us that God is not yet through with us or our world. ELCA Youth Gathering update regarding MYLE and the tAble
The ELCA Youth Gathering has announced that, during its 2024 cycle, it will waive registration fees for the first 1,000 people who register for the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the first 200 people who register for the tAble. Registration for the Gathering opens Sept. 15. Participants in MYLE or the tAble must attend the Gathering as well. Check ELCA.org/Gathering for updates in the coming months.
