March 2022

Greetings,

We are nearing the midpoint of our Lenten journey toward the Three Days at the center of the church year, when we make the passage with Christ through death into life (ELW, p. 247). A hymn in All Creation Sings reminds us that the liturgies of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil help worshiping communities encounter Christ not only in the proclaimed word but in the actions and patterns of these unique services.

The myst’ry hid from ages past
is here revealed in word and sign,
for Jesus’ story is our own:
new life through death is God’s design.

Delores Dufner, OSB (ACS 930)

Whether you are planning worship in your context or preparing to experience these holy days as a member of the worshiping assembly, consider how you might this year experience Jesus’ story in these “new-old rites.” After two years of the pandemic necessitating changes to worship experiences, what new learnings during these years will be carried forward? What aspects might return this year after a two-year absence?

Blessings as you move through this season of Lent toward the Three Days and on to 50 days of Easter joy.

In peace,
Deacon John E. Weit
Executive for Worship
