Greetings,
Christ is the life beyond all time, creation’s birth and breath, whose labor brings all things to be and brings all things to death.
These words from the hymn “Christ Is the Life” (All Creation Sings 927) were written by Susan Palo Cherwien. Susan died on Dec. 28, 2021. Visit this recent ELCA Worship blog for a listing of her hymns in our ELCA worship resources. Susan also speaks about her inspiration for this particular hymn in a video produced by Augsburg Fortress.
Susan’s hymn texts and poetic meditations invite us in Lent and in any season to dwell in the mystery of God, who dwelled in the birth and death of Christ. In her meditation titled “Returning to the Soil,” Cherwien writes,
When our winter approaches it is not cruelty that we are returned to the soil. It is simply the right time It is simply the right time. And our stories, our songs, our lives will nourish the next generation in the great cycle of life that turns about us. (Crossings: Meditations for Worship, MorningStar Music Publishers, p. 81)
Blessings to you as we begin our Lenten journey.
