  Lifelines

SPRING “LIFELINES” IS NOW AVAILABLE!
We live in a time when hope might seem the road less traveled. Around the globe, climate change, political unrest, a record number of displaced people, and food systems taxed by a global pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine War are all driving hunger and poverty. Yet closer examination reveals that the less-traveled road of hope is an ever-widening one that holds inspiring surprises we can celebrate together.

Just in the last year, ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response were at work in 76 countries and 43 U.S. states and territories.

“GOD’S NEW CREATION” VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL NOW AVAILABLE!
Farming communities around the world are important when it comes to ending hunger. They provide the world’s food, but often farmers, especially smallholder farmers, are at high risk for hunger themselves. Working with farmers to improve harvests, save money and prepare for the future can be big steps toward ending hunger around the world.

“God’s New Creation” is about this work together. Each day of Vacation Bible School offers large- and small-group activities, crafts, games, snacks and more. These are designed to be adaptable, so you can adjust the program to meet your needs. Download or order your copy of ELCA World Hunger’s newest VBS curriculum today!

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: CITIZENS OF LOUISVILLE ORGANIZED AND UNITED TOGETHER (CLOUT)
Citizens of Louisville Organized and United Together (CLOUT), an ELCA World Hunger Domestic Hunger Grant partner, gathered for its Nehemiah Action Assembly in May. Members celebrated that, over the past seven years, CLOUT has assisted in getting the Louisville Metro Council to allocate a total of $97.5 million to the Louisville Affordable Housing Trust Fund, which has leveraged an additional $732 million for housing initiatives. So far this support has assisted in the construction and/or preservation of over 4,200 units of safe, decent and affordable housing!

FAITHFUL ADVOCACY TO RENEW THE FARM BILL
Bishop Eaton made remarks and introduced U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan (pictured), chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, at an event co-sponsored with Bread for the World on Capitol Hill on April 25.

The event was part of the ELCA’s advocacy work to renew the farm bill later this year. The farm bill is crucial legislation that addresses hunger in the United States and around the world. It affects federal nutrition programs, environmental practices, trade, foreign aid, rural development and more.

The ELCA held listening sessions to inform its farm bill advocacy and will continue to work with partners throughout the reauthorization process in 2023. Together we can bring our experience, expertise and faith convictions to advance a just world where all are fed.
