Dear friends in Christ,

A blessed Holy Week to you!

This week, perhaps more than any week in the church calendar, brings us into the paradox at the heart of our faith — even as we mourn, we celebrate. We are caught here, in this week, in the space between the cross and the empty tomb, the intersection of deep pain and profound hope.

Those of us engaged in hunger ministries know this paradox well. To respond to hunger is to confront the mournful realities behind hunger and be honest about the trauma and grief we find. Yet, as so many of us have found, to respond to hunger is also to walk in joy and hope with one another, celebrating stories of courage, resilience and transformation.

This Easter season we remember that paradox. Tragically, rates of hunger and poverty continue to climb around the world because of famine, inflation and conflict. We expect food insecurity in the United States to increase as the COVID-19 expansion of public benefits expires and as food, energy and housing prices continue to climb.

We lament those truths. And yet, we celebrate the resilient hope of our partners and forge ahead in hope to the future God has promised us.

I hope this issue of “Go & Do News” inspires your courage to live into that Holy Week tension —between the cross and the empty tomb, between the banquet table and the empty plate. Know we are there together, companions journeying toward a time when we will hunger and thirst no more, a time that even now is being revealed in the work of our partners, our companion churches and you.

In Christ,

Ryan P. Cumming, Ph.D.

TRINITY PLACE SHELTER FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES
Brandon Wells lived in homeless shelters in Los Angeles and New York — including Trinity Place Shelter, an ELCA World Hunger partner. Trinity's mission is to support homeless LGBTQIA+ youth and young adults in New York City.

The New York Times reported on Wells' experience after moving to New York City upon graduation from fashion design school in Los Angeles. The move proved challenging, and Wells became homeless. Trinity Place Shelter offered him a safe space where he could position himself to thrive: he ended up landing a job as a sample room assistant for designer Vera Wang.

The Rev. Heidi Neumark, executive director of Trinity Place Shelter, offers valuable insight on the intersections between sexuality, gender identity, hunger and justice in our first "Hunger at the Crossroads" webinar.

WORLD WATER DAY
March 22 marked the 31st annual World Water Day, a United Nations observance celebrating the progress the world has made in providing access to clean, safe water for all and remembering how far we still have to go to meet that goal as a global community.

Projects and initiatives that provide access to clean water and sanitation have long been part of the work supported by ELCA World Hunger — and with good reason. Check out ELCA World Hunger's latest blog post to learn more about the intersection of water and hunger.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUNGER TEAM MAKES A DIFFERENCE
The Northern Illinois Synod held its annual congregational resourcing event in March under the theme "Be the Body." The synod's ELCA World Hunger committee offered a workshop on the synod's feeding ministries. Four panelists discussed how they started and have grown their programs, and offered tips and strategies for success. The panelists represented a weekly-meal feeding ministry ("Ruthie's Kitchen" in Rockford, Ill.), a traditional food pantry, a food pantry that also has a community garden with raised garden boxes, and a "pop-up" food pantry supplied by a regional food bank.

Understanding hunger — and working to end it — means seeing the many ways hunger and poverty intersect with other issues, including climate change, food production, access to housing, racial justice and gender justice. Check out "Hunger at the Crossroads," a webinar series hosted by ELCA World Hunger, to explore these intersections and the ways we fulfill God's promise of a just world where all are fed.

"A CHURCH IN THE METRO HOPES TO SAVE A COMMUNITY GARDEN"
Minneapolis station KSTP recently reported on Rice Street Gardens in Maplewood, Minn., a longtime domestic grant partner of ELCA World Hunger:

"Rice Street Gardens in Maplewood is quiet and dormant now, with hundreds of growing spaces covered in snow. ‘This is a very special place,’ declares Pastor Dana Nelson, with Galilee Lutheran Church. ‘It's a safe place. It's a place to spend May through October. It opens in May and ends in October.’ Nelson and church staffers — their place of worship is just across the street, in Roseville — are thinking about the future, when this place will be green again, tended by hundreds of people."
