Hunger in the Time of COVID-19: Life for Today and Hope for Tomorrow
Rick Steves, guidebook author and travel TV host; the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA); and the Rev. Shelley Bryan Wee, bishop of the Northwest Washington Synod of the ELCA, invite you to a virtual benefit — the first of its kind — for ELCA World Hunger. This Zoom virtual event will take place Thursday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m. Central time. Our goal is to raise $250,000 to confront hunger in the time of COVID-19.
We are called by God to share hope in this time of challenge. There is still time to register for this extraordinary event to face this global hunger crisis head-on and to continue moving toward a just world where all are fed. Please spread the word among your congregations and communities. Register now or visit https://www.elca.org/hungerfundraiser to learn more.

Government and Civic Engagement Social Message
The ELCA Church Council has unanimously adopted a new social message: “Government and Civic Engagement in the United States: Discipleship in a Democracy.” This project was called for at the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, with an intention that it be ready to read before the election this fall. The social message explores how government is a gift from God that can also be abused and misused. It also delves into how we can view civic engagement as Lutherans. You can find the social message and study guide here.

“Stories of Faith in Action”
“Stories of Faith in Action” is an annual publication highlighting how God changes lives through ministries funded by Mission Support. Mission Support is the portion of your offering that your congregation shares with your synod, and your synod shares with the ELCA churchwide organization. This publication and the resources that accompany it illustrate how your congregational offering sustains and advances the work of this church. Stories, videos and an interactive flipbook of the publication are available at ELCA.org/SOFIA.

Each year, one student from each ELCA-affiliated seminary is invited to create an innovative class, encounter or series for people steeped in biblical texts, as well as those unfamiliar with them, and then report their learnings. The 2020 HFBFC centers on the theme “The Bible — Word Not Weapon.” You are invited to join the conversation in this year’s four online events.
