An Advent reflection from Daudi Msseemmaa, regional representative to East Africa:
December in Tanzania is many things to the country's many cultures and faiths. Not all Tanzanians are Christian, but everyone enjoys the month of Advent celebrations. In town you’ll see convoys of decorated cars passing on Thursdays (sendoffs), Saturdays (weddings) and Sundays (baptisms and confirmations), and sometimes stopping so people can take photos of the landscaped roundabouts and gardens.
I remember my last Christmas in my father’s serene, dusty home village in the Rift Valley, when about 25 youth were confirmed at Engaruka Juu Lutheran Church. After the service we went confirmation-party hopping, partaking in a plate of meat and pilau rice at each home. By evening we were stuffed. In a place where hunger is rife and meat is a luxury for many, this was a very satisfying feeling.

News Around the World |
The 27th Conference of the Parties summit of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) recently concluded in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Delegates from 200 countries included representatives from the ELCA, its partner churches and organizations around the world. The most significant outcome of the two-week summit was establishment of a fund to address climate-induced loss and damage. However, the Lutheran World Federation’s representative at the conference declared that the international community must do more to decisively address climate change.
