Living Lutheran: So more people may know the way of Jesus

On Feb. 1, the ELCA churchwide organization implemented Future Church, a new working structure focused on motivating the entire church to actively share the way of Jesus with more people so that they might experience community, justice and love. The design emphasizes the belief that members, congregations, synods, the churchwide organization and its partner organizations all have important roles in the church’s mission. The church’s three expressions (congregations, synods and the churchwide organization) will remain, but the Future Church design is centered on a “One Church” identity that will bring greater collaboration to the mission of sharing the gospel and God’s grace in the world. Living Lutheran talked about Future Church and what it means for the life of the ELCA with Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton; Phil Hirsch, executive director of ELCA Christian Community and Leadership; Mikka McCracken, executive director of ELCA Innovation; and Bill Horne, ELCA vice president. Living Lutheran: Servants in the time of COVID-19

As the coronavirus pandemic has swept the globe, it has brought pain and loss, disrupted lives and pushed many to their breaking point. But this health crisis has created something else too — a call to service, a spirit of helping others, a renewed appreciation for what truly matters. Through their professional roles and volunteer endeavors, Lutherans have felt this call to provide comfort, assistance and the promise of God’s love to their fellow human. Whether through frontline work with patients, comforting grieving families, making masks or donating time and supplies, Lutherans are stepping up to help others weather this storm. You can read a few of their stories here, in the March issue of Living Lutheran.

What Makes Us Lutheran?

A global study on Lutheran identity was launched by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in 2019. This Lent members of the ELCA are invited to take part in this study, sharing their own perspectives on Christian and Lutheran identities, by participating in the Global Survey on Being Lutheran/Encuesta Mundial Sobre lo Que Significa Ser Luteran. The survey will be open through March 31, and responses gathered will help to shape the 13th LWF Assembly in 2023.

Online Worship Service for Earth Day

Lutherans Restoring Creation is happy to present the ELCA community with another special online service. In celebration of Earth Day, this service is intended for use on April 25 but can be downloaded for use according to a congregation's needs. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will be preaching as part of this special service of liturgy, visual journeys, musical offerings, pastoral insights and inspiration from lay leaders. Register now to receive a special link with download instructions by April 18. Visit Lutherans Restoring Creation for updates and details.

Interreligious solidarity during COVID-19 and beyond

The World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue have released a joint document, “Serving a Wounded World in Interreligious Solidarity: A Christian Call to Reflection and Action During COVID-19 and Beyond.” Its purpose is to encourage churches and Christian organizations to reflect on the importance of interreligious solidarity in a world wounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. The document offers a Christian basis for interreligious solidarity that can inspire and confirm the impulse to serve a world battered not only by COVID-19 but also by many other ills.

Deadline approaching: Don’t miss out on a Paycheck Protection Program loan

Whether or not your congregation benefited from the first round of PPP loans, it may be eligible now to receive its first or second loan to sustain payroll and operating expenses during the pandemic. As a lender certified by the Small Business Administration, the ELCA Federal Credit Union (FCU) has administered nearly 300 PPP loans for ELCA ministries nationwide and is currently accepting new applications. The FCU can assist any eligible ELCA congregation or ministry, even if it received its first PPP loan though a different lender. Apply by Monday, March 22, to ensure adequate processing time before the federal deadline on March 31.
