Hope Found in Paper Cranes

Pastor Kazuhiro Sekino, an International Leaders scholarship recipient from the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church, recently found a creative way to offer hope to COVID-19 patients at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, where he’s currently interning as a chaplain. Drawing from a Japanese tradition, Sekino began to fold paper cranes to give to patients — and soon his efforts were multiplied when people in Japan sent thousands of paper cranes to the hospital. “Paper cranes now are a spot of healing for [patients],” Sekino said.

We mourn the loss of two great leaders in the global Lutheran communion: the Rev. Molwane Job Henock Ubane, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa, and the Rev. Fabián Kreischer, vice president of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Argentina and Uruguay. Please keep their families and our companion churches in your prayers.

Announcements

Due to the risks and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ELCA has decided to cancel sending Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteers for the 2021-22 program year. “As you know, we hold closely the value of accompaniment, where we seek to walk alongside our partners and share in life's joys and life's burdens,” said Dan Beirne, program director for YAGM leadership formation. “In this unique case, ‘walking alongside’ means keeping our distance.” Read more in this press release.

Meanwhile, the ELCA is continuing to send missionaries into service as it becomes possible with safety precautions. At this time, the ELCA is sending three new missionaries:

  • Hannah Jensen-Reinke, ESL teacher in Japan
  • Hannah Koby, Wittenberg Center intern in Germany
  • The Rev. Charles (Chuck) Peterson, seminary professor in Indonesia
Please pray for our missionaries and companions, and if you’re sensing a call to global service yourself, consider applying for an open position. Explore global ELCA job openings here.
