  Global Farm Challenge

ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran Disaster Response have always been intricately connected, but in recent months global events have reminded us again just how vital the work of God through these shared ministries is for communities around the world.

As the world looks to incredibly complex challenges in the days ahead, the newest issue of “LifeLines” lifts up stories of hope, of new opportunity and of God at work even amid tragedy and instability. Thanks to all who partner with us and advocate for ELCA World Hunger to make this work possible. We hope these stories can equip you to continue sharing the good news of our collective impact in the work to end hunger and poverty around the world.

UPDATES FROM THE HORN OF AFRICA
The Horn of Africa is experiencing its worst drought in decades. Through the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), ELCA World Hunger is working alongside the local government in the Kakuma region of Kenya to build the capacity of families to respond to and withstand worsening droughts in the region. LWF initiatives include training in climate-smart farming practices, building and repairing water wells, managing the water supply, promoting hygiene and more.

Visit the ELCA World Hunger blog to read Kojo, James and Esther's stories and learn about the impact of our work together to end hunger in the Horn of Africa.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: SEA-EYE RESCUE SHIP
Just after midnight on May 17, 2021, the crew of the German Sea-Eye 4 rescue ship received a distress call alerting them to a boat of migrants in danger in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. The Sea-Eye 4 had already conducted two rescue operations the previous afternoon and early evening. With 229 refugees on board, the ship was crowded, but the crew knew they had to respond to the distress call they had received.

This was only the first mission for the Sea-Eye 4 during a 48-hour period in which six rescue operations would take place.

ELCA World Hunger supported the conversion of this supply ship, built in 1979, into one that could conduct rescues in the Mediterranean. Keep reading the story below, from the October issue of Living Lutheran.

ADVOCACY: URGE EXTENSION OF CHILD TAX CREDIT BEFORE YEAR END

In 2021 the Child Tax Credit (CTC) expansion lifted almost 3 million children out of poverty. Since the expansion has expired, we have seen sharp rises in childhood poverty. Our congregations and members are helping families in the greatest need through direct giving and service, but we can also look to vital policy as a means of ministry engagement. Urge lawmakers to extend the CTC and protect children and families today:
