“Now Is the Time: A Study Guide for ELCA Declaration to People of African Descent”

A new study guide helps congregations wrestle with the meaning of “Declaration of the ELCA to People of African Descent” and its accompanying explanation. The declaration was adopted by the ELCA Church Council on June 27, 2019, and presented to the Churchwide Assembly later that year. This study guide provides an avenue for the realization, self-examination and accountability the church requires to “apologiz[e] to people of African descent for its complicity in slavery and its enduring legacy of racism in the United States and globally,” in the declaration’s words. The five-part study guide includes handouts for participants. Learn more and download resources.

Living Lutheran: “I’m a Lutheran” — Darryl W. Jones

“I pray for peace, equity and kindness for all people. For churches of all denominations to not be so segregated. For an end to hunger and injustice. I’m a Lutheran because I can care about more than just me and my local congregation, and the Lutheran church gives you literally the opportunity to care about the world.” In the January/February issue of Living Lutheran, Darryl W. Jones reflects on his experiences at church, the way music connects him with his faith, and his hopes and passions for the world. Read more about him in “I’m a Lutheran.”

Lenten resources for 40 Days of Giving

For nearly two years, as the world has reeled from the effects of a deadly pandemic, we have seen the number of hungry people rise, watched as food pantries and soup kitchens expanded to serve an ever-growing number of guests, and longed for the time when we “will hunger no more, and thirst no more . . . and God will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes” (Revelation 7:16). We invite you to study, pray, reflect and give during ELCA World Hunger’s 40 Days of Giving campaign, which begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2. Visit ELCA.org/40Days for resources including a calendar, a study guide, an action guide for congregations and a weekly email series.

2022 ELCA Youth Gathering canceled

Earlier this month, the ELCA announced that the 2022 Youth Gathering has been canceled due to the ongoing pandemic, the recent COVID-19 surge and public health considerations. The Gathering pre-events — the Multicultural Youth Leadership Event (MYLE) and the tAble, the ELCA gathering for youth with disabilities — have also been canceled. The announcement emphasized the ELCA's commitment "to supporting the young people of our church and to seeing that the ministry of the Gathering, MYLE and the tAble continue for years to come." Visit ELCA.org/Gathering to read the full statement, and find information about refunds in these frequently asked questions.
