At the beginning of August, we launched a survey for Future Church: God’s Love Made Real. In this work, we failed to recognize ELCA Disability Ministries by not being more inclusive of their works and offerings in and across the ecology of this church.
We understand that this mistake is not representative of our social message People Living with Disabilities, adopted by the ELCA Church Council in 2010 and that our siblings who are living with disabilities were hurt by our lack of acknowledgement.
The social message is grounded in the biblical view of human beings finding freedom in relationships and community. It commits the ELCA to confirm full inclusion and equitable participation of all people within the life of society and the church, embracing the whole person — disabilities, abilities, questions, complexities and all.
We would like to formally apologize to our community of people living with disabilities for this negligence and we pray for our church that we continue to listen, learn and faithfully live into the commitments we have made to you for the sake of mending our relationship.
Sincerely,
Louise Johnson Executive for Administration, Office of the Presiding Bishop |
