Information for all congregations, SAWCs, and new starts about the Annual Congregation Report
To provide a record of the congregations and worshiping communities that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), every congregation, synod-authorized worshiping community (SAWC), and new start is asked to provide information about its people, finances, and resources each year through the Annual Congregation Report.
As in previous years, all ELCA congregations, SAWCs, and new starts will receive an Annual Congregation Report packet through the mail. This packet should arrive by mid-January and will contain paper versions of Form A, an instructional document on how to complete Form A, and a financial stewardship worksheet. Included on Form A is the password needed to file your report online.
You may notice several changes to this year's packet.
- There is now only one form to complete, Form A, which asks for congregation statistics and financial data. The kinds of questions previously asked on Form C will instead be gathered through surveys across the year.
- Form A has been redesigned to make it more readable and easier to complete.
- The instructions have been improved to provide better explanations for how to complete Form A and define what terms mean.
We recognize that your congregation may wish to begin compiling information for Form A before you receive the Annual Congregation Report packet through the mail. You can access electronic versions of Form A, instructions, and the financial stewardship worksheet at elca.org/reportinstructions.
The Office of the Secretary asks that your congregation submit Form A online, if possible. Filing online reduces errors in data entry and eliminates both postage expenses and the chance that your form will get lost in the mail. Additionally, when your congregation files online, the data becomes immediately available to staff in your synod and at the churchwide organization. The system for online submission of Form A, accessible at elca.org/congregationreport, will open mid-January.
If you need to submit your form on paper, you will mail the original completed form to your synod office. Whether you respond electronically or on paper, please submit the form by March 1, 2024.
If you have not yet submitted your congregation's 2022 data, you can still do so using the online system through Dec. 21, 2023.
