Celebrating 10 years of “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday
On Sunday, Sept. 10, congregations of the ELCA will join together for our 10th annual day of service. “God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday began in 2013 in connection with the ELCA’s 25th anniversary and continues to be a day to celebrate who we are — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. As you explore opportunities to participate in your community, ELCA.org/DayofService has the resources you need to plan and promote your day, including a tool kit, worship materials, videos, posters, social media graphics and a special hymn. Celebrate 10 years on the 10th!

Living Lutheran: “A ‘Mission’ to the Future”
In Living Lutheran’s May/June lead feature, Jennifer Bringle writes about new-start congregations providing innovative ministry models and bringing fresh faces to worship. Charbel Zgheib is mission developer for a new synod-authorized worshiping community that serves Afghan, Arab and Middle Eastern people in Sacramento, Calif., and reaches the local community through an Arab-speaking radio station. After officiating at several LGBTQIA+ weddings, mission developer Maria Rojas-Banda of Misión Luterana Unidad in Berwyn, Ill., showed local LGBTQIA+ community members that Unidad was a safe place for them to worship and be their authentic selves. Read more about how these worship communities are changing and challenging traditional church models.

Juneteenth resources and reflections
“Juneteenth is a celebration that takes place across our nation in many African American communities commemorating the end of slavery,” writes Kenneth Wheeler in a Living Lutheran Juneteenth reflection. “The observance dates back to June 19, 1865. This was two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which legally put an end to slavery.” Find an ELCA Juneteenth worship resource and read more Juneteenth prayers and reflections on livinglutheran.org. “Juneteenth reminds me of how priceless that freedom is and of this long line of people—Black, white, Jews, Gentiles—who stood up to secure this freedom.”
