Environmental Sustainability
The more scientists learn about wetlands, the more valuable they become. Wetland ecologists have documented the following environmental benefits: water purification, flood protection, shoreline stabilization, groundwater recharge, and streamflow maintenance. Wetlands also provide habitat for fish and wildlife, including endangered species. In addition to the above, the wetlands that protect New Orleans are critical to slowing and deflating approaching storms. The rebuilding process is slow and tedious, and many hands will make a huge difference in a short amount of time.
